Project Description
This program now supports a Peer Group at a St. Albert Junior High School. Mike Ryan of Clean Scene is our contact person. Their focus is on introducing students with substance use/abuse issues to effective thinking skills. They provide preventative substance use/abuse education through a one-on-one therapeutic mentoring system every two weeks for a minimum of .5 hours to as much as an hour. Mentees are provided opportunities to participate in other events and programming as well as volunteer opportunities The impact on the school population is noticed as fewer students are using drugs. The school staff, teachers and administrators, as well as parents of the young people involved have a better understanding of the importance of this program. Saint City Rotary has received District Matching Grant funding for 2015/16, 2016/17 and is applying for funding for 2017/18. We are kept updated by Mike Ryan who would be very happy to speak to your club about the possibility of making peer mentoring a project for your club. https://www.cleanscene.ca/

Project Results
Very positive results since the inception of this program. Most students who participate in the peer group experience graduate from grade 9. There are difficulties in maintaining the program during summer holidays and in high school due to lack of funding. An ideal situation would be to have a program for the families of the students involved and funding to support the youth involved with the legal system (charges and court involvement).
