Project Description
The 'Dirty Hands' Belize is a joint project between the Interact and Rotary Clubs of Edson to improve elementary schools in Belize. Four Rotarians and 4-8 Interactors provide labour for 2 weeks to improved a school's infrastructure (washrooms, water wells, safety improvements, etc). Goals and Objectives 1. Opportunity for both Rotarians and Interactors to travel together internationally (learn travel skills, advance international understanding, goodwill, and peace). 2. Opportunity for both Rotarians and Interactors to become immersed in true poverty and manual labour. 3. Opportunity for both Rotarians and Interactors to gain construction and project management skills. 4. Long-term improvement (water well, school, clinic, playground, etc). 5. Rotary Club of Edson is the primary Canadian club. Timelines: 2 weeks including spring break each year Funding: The Rotary Club raises funds for the improvements and to cover its own travel expenses. The Interact club raises funds to cover its own travel expenses, approximately $2,000 per student. Each participant (Rotarian or Interactor) is expected to donate $500 toward the project.

Project Results
2013 Results 2 Rotarians and 4 Interactors did major improvements to the Franks Eddy Goverment School: 1. Doubled the number of washrooms and added a wheelchair accessible washroom 2. ceiling fans in all classrooms 3. A/C in library/computer room 4. Leveled 2 soccer fields 5. Welded soccer goals and repaired flag pole 6. Planted shade trees for playground 7. Bat-proofed the roofs (teachers were getting lung infections) 8. Built outdoor wash basin 9. Installed actual windows on classrooms with just wooden shutters 2014 Update This year 3 Rotarians and 4 Interactors we will be building an assembly/kitchen building for the 'Hills of Hope' School in Benque, Belize, near the border of Guatemala.
