Malawi "A Cause to Celebrate" Wine Tasting

Project Description
In 2012, the Rotary Club of Wetaskiwin started a new partnership and a new annual event. The Mango Advancement Project (www.mango-advancement-project.org) exists to provide educational opportunities for at-risk children in Malawi, and is striving to keep girls in school beyond age 13. We have created a problem-solving, creative-thinking learning environment that TMAP believes will keep both girls and boys in school, learning skills that will lead them to a better quality of life. TMAP's Kondwani Kindergarten has grown from a group of 15 children with founder Faith Kawonga to 68 in 2012. Wetaskiwin Rotarians embraced the international project as part of their focus on youth in the international community. In order to raise funds, Rotarians worked together to start an annual wine tasting event. The event was organized in collaboration with local community supporters. The Arber Greenhouse hosted the event. Gord's No Frills supplied the food, which was cooked and catered by Brady of Pipestone Foods and Jessie of Glenn's Grill. The second year received yet another sponsor, Glenn of Wetaskiwin Teleconnect, who provided buses to pick up and deliver guests. This event allows us to raise funds to provide education to students who would not otherwise be able to get an education. "What better place to host the event than the Arber Greenhouse. It is a fantastic venue; just walking through the greenhouse is an amazing and uplifting experience." Along with the wine tasting, Wetaskiwin Rotarians donate $100 on behalf of each guest speaker. And in order to raise continued funds, Wetaskiwin area cooperatives joined to flip burgers at local events and raise more funds for the school.

Project Results
At the first event (June, 2012), Wetaskiwin Rotarians raised $12,000 to put towards the educational programs. The second event (June, 2013) showed increased support with a 30% increase in attendees. (Fundraising numbers have yet to be compiled for the second year's event.) Growth at TMAP has been exponential. In November 2012 they needed a temporary first grade classroom until a permanent one could be built. They are extremely grateful for the support that has been given. It is amazing to see the difference it is making in the lives of the students.
