Prince Charles Elementary School Spaghetti Dinners

Avenue of Service: Community Service Area of Focus: Basic Education and Literacy
Country: Canada City/Region: Edmonton
Project Description
In our continuing support of Prince Charles School, we encourage parents and families each year to come out to the Student Led Conferences with a very subtle (or not so subtle) bribe of food. Prince Charles is part of the "Apple Schools Program" meaning that nutritious food such as fruit is served during the school day and in 2013 whole wheat spaghetti has been used. Prince Charles School is a "school of choice" that provides an Aboriginal program (Cree language and cultural experiences) in addition to the normal curriculum. The students of Price Charles come from all over the north side of Edmonton with over 90 per cent of students using buses.

Project Results
Our first year was a smashing success and the event continues to increase attendance from about an original 40 to 250 at a very low cost. Programs like this are very important in inner-city schools where many youth-at-risk are often not well supported by parents. The project capitalizes on the fact that a meal makes the logistics and economics of attending student led conferences much more for parents who often work long hours for below average pay.
