Project Description
|
Camp fYrefly is an educational, social, and personal learning retreat for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans-identified, two-spirited, queer, and allied (LGBTTQ&A) youth. It focuses on building and nurturing their leadership potential and personal resiliency in an effort to help them learn how to make significant contributions to their own lives and to their schools, home/group-home environments, and communities. The camp is designed for LGBTTQ&A youth between the ages of 14 and 24. |

Project Results
|
Before 2013, Camp fYrefly could not continue without the support of the Urban Spirits. Camp fYrefly reported that the funding was both a necessity to continue the program, but the Rotary brand name helped attract other donors who may otherwise have been nervous to donate to an LGBTTQ&A youth camp. In 2013 Camp fYrefly received $500,000 from the Stollery Foundation and an Institute of Sexual Minority Studies and Services was created at the University of Alberta.
Camp fYrefly has also reported that they are the only youth camp of their kind that they know of, which is driving a cross Canada expansion. Participants have come from across Canada, the United States, and Europe.
Ongoing donations include $5,000 in 2011-2012 and $1,500 in 2012-2013. |
