Project Description
The club funded a project to support a multi-media solution to deliver the program using a fun, innovative and interactive approach that can be expanded to a larger number of kids. ''The Spoke" was initiated as a response to an informal youth run bicycle chop shop along Alberta Avenue, as a creative solution to a common community concern. The program is a partnership between the City of Edmonton Neighborhood Empowerment Team (NET), the Edmonton Bicycle Commuters (EBC), the Edmonton Police Service, and community volunteers. The Spoke provides workspace, knowledgeable volunteers, and the tools for youth to rebuild bikes that would have otherwise been thrown away. After completing a session, the youth will have the chance to lead future sessions with other kids from the community. The project provides pro-social activities for youth as a means of reducing social isolation and building an inclusive community.
